Can ice burn fat?

Weight loss is something millions of people desire and go all out for! So the question is, what are you willing to do for weight loss?

I know there are many quick fix solutions out there to help you lose weight. Like the Miami diet, Paleolithic diet and so on but do they really work?

I have no idea, I have never tried any of them but I'm going to share one method that is working for me right now!

The solution that I am about to introduce to you is not easy by any stretch of the imagination but it is time efficient. The solution is ice baths!

You read it right and yes, it is difficult the first time around. This process of taking ice baths for weight loss has been popularized by the author and experimenter Tim Ferris. I highly recommend that you Google him and find out more about his experiments into building muscle mass, weight loss, injury recovery and body augmentation.

He is a well respected and celebrated author.

Anyways, How does it work?

Its all about Brown adipose tissue (BAT) or brown fat.

Essentially humans have a small amount of brown fat located in the neck region. We have more of it when we are infants but the amount decreases as we get older.

These brown fats help to burn off the unsightly cellulite that covers our bodies. We can trigger our brown fats with cold temperatures. You guessed it right, this is where the ice bath comes in.

Need I say more? Ok I will...

Let's put it this way, your body loves to be at 98.6°. Your body will do anything it can to stay at that level. It is the natural state your body is always in. So what happens when your body starts losing that temperature, it will naturally try to raise that temperature by burning fat.

Any activity you can imagine done in cold-weather will yield more fat burning results; simply because your body has to work harder to accomplish that same activity. From picking up a pencil to running a marathon, your body has to work harder under colder temperatures.

Plain and simple!

Don't Trust Me - Trust Your Resources And Yourself

Before you proceed, I want you to know that this article that you're reading is a jumping off point. I really want you to do more research on your own and on the internet about cold temperature and how it effects brown fat and weight loss. I also recommend that you read up on Tim Ferris and his methodology behind weight loss with cold temperatures.

Find and research opposing arguments and use your own critical judgment to form your own opinions. You should take this approach with everything in life.

Building up to swim with penguins....

Hold on there! We need to learn to crawl before we can walk and we need to learn to walk before we can run.

First the ice packs then come the cold showers then into the ice bath you go!

I would like you to place one ice pack behind your neck and one ice pack on the upper part of your chest for 30 minutes. You can go ahead and watch TV while you're doing this. This little activity will activate your brown fat.

If you find this activity to be easy then you can graduate to cold showers. Next time you are taking a shower turn off the heat and let the cold water run all over your body. It's going to be hard but you can do it! Stay in there for 7 to 10 minutes.

Now you're in the big leagues Bub!

The method is quite simple in theory but difficult to practice. Are you ready? here goes:

  • fill half of your bathtub with cold water
  • dump at least 5 to 7 pounds of ice into the bathtub
  • let 80% of the ice melt into the bathtub
  • sit in the bathtub and submerge your legs and waist in the icy cold water for five minutes, keep your arms and hands outside of the water
  • submerge more of your body into the cold water until you reach the beginning of your neck line - stay submerged for another five minutes, remember to keep your arms and hands outside of the water.

Follow this procedure three times a week. 10 minutes each time - five minutes with only your legs and waist submerged and the next five minutes with everything but your neck, head, hands and arms submerged.

The amount of weight loss may very but this method is backed up by hard science. I myself have lost over 10 pounds in the first three weeks of this weight loss method. I sincerely urge you to do more research on brown fats, Tim Ferris and ice baths on the internet and on other trusted sites.

Are Ice baths for everyone? Of course not! It takes a lot of moxie to stick your whole body in ice water, but if you can stand a little pain three times a week to help you lose weight and to get a general feeling of accomplishment then go on ahead and take a dip.

If you have any severe health conditions please do not try this.

I saw this on Dr. Oz yesterday and thought it pretty interesting. I appreciate that you recommend looking into it further before trying it. Thanks for an informative hub.

Hey I am wondering how much weight you need to lose? 10 pounds in 3 weeks is awesome but are you dieting too? Exercising? Are you overweight by a lot or a little?

at the time of this post, just ice baths. I gave up ice-bathing because it was too hard. I fast periodically these days and i lift weights 3 times a week without fail.
