How To Keep Your Outside Dog Pens Clean

I have an adorable basset hound. She is playful and lovable. Problem is that it takes so much effort for me to just bathe her. I need to wrestle her to just bathe and this isn’t easy. My point here is that dogs are naturally messy. They cannot clean up after themselves so it’s our job as their dog owners to keep them clean. That includes the outside dog pens that they frequent in. Do you have problem with dog pens too? This article will tell you how to keep your dog pens clean and sanitized.

Dogs are quite a handful. But if you put all you have got just to keep them healthy and clean, I am sure that you will be able to handle this dirty and difficult task ahead of you.

Despite the fact that dogs are naturally messy, you still need to clean them to keep them healthy. Not only them, you should also find time to clean the place they stay in. If you fail to do so, their place will attract flies, fleas, bacteria, and the like. As a result, your dog will be prone to sickness and infection. I know that you love your dog so much that you want to keep this from happening. Keep your outside dog pen clean and germ-free by following the instructions below:

  • Pick or remove all your dog’s fecal matter using a shovel or a pooper scooper. Dump the poop in a plastic bag. You can do this at least every two days. If you don’t do this within this period, your place will start to smell. Worst, the awful scent will stick to the ground or to your place. You can always hire someone if you don’t have the time to do this. A dog service pick-up is one service you can avail of.
  • Combine four parts of water and one part bleach to clean cemented pen flooring. Remove your pets from the pen. Transfer them to a place where they can’t access the pen you are cleaning. Hose the flooring and the walls. Let it dry for four hours or so. When you are sure that the pen is completely dry, bring your dogs back in.
  • If you have a small and closed outdoor pen, you can fill the flooring with cedar shavings. Do not leave any space uncovered. Make sure that the shaving is about an inch deep. This will take away the stench and fend off icky fleas. Pine is a good alternative to cedar if your dog is allergic to that.
  • Buy pet mats for your outside dog pen. You can get them at pet stores without difficulty. These mats are easier to clean and are long-lasting too.

One important advice I can give you is to not use blankets on your outside dog pen. These blankies are prone to moist where bacteria usually thrive. Save up for pet beddings that are specially made for the outdoors. Keeping outside dog pens is quite easy. Don’t you think so too? Your dog’s safety and happiness should be your motivation so you are untiring when it comes to cleaning up after them. Good luck!
