The Ins And Outs Of Search Engine Optimization - SEO
in the real world, it's all about location, Location and location. If you have a store or a vending machine then you want that store or vending machine to be in front of a lot of people.
There is no point in having a great store in the middle of the Gobi Desert. Ideally, you want your store to be in Times Square.
on the Internet it's not about location it's about keyword phrases.
You want to have posts or pages that are focused on what people are looking for.
so if 3000 people in America search for the term HOW TO CLEAN MY POODLES PAWS a month
then ideally I want a page on my website to come up on the first page of Google, preferably on the first, second or third listing for the keyword phrase: HOW TO CLEAN MY POODLES PAWS.
example:
Let's say you have a blog about dog care and you want to drive more traffic to your site. (I'm assuming you live in the states)
Here's what you do,
first you go to the "Google keyword search tool" - https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
second, you put in a general keyword phrase about the specific niche you are in - for example it's DOG CARE
Type in dog care and hit search. Before you look at the results you should go to the left side of the screen and uncheck broad search and check exact search.
this will give you a more accurate reading on what people are looking for.
then look at the local search monthly volume for the keyword phrases listed.
Let's say you find a keyword phrase [how to dress your miniature poodle] - it has about 1000 exact searches a month.
Okay, now you have a keyword phrase that people are looking for and that you're interested in.
What's next?
Evaluate your competition.
There are several things you need to do to see if the competition is fierce or not.
First you want to see if the keyword phrase you will be using is in your competitions title, description and in the domain.
Ideally, you do not want your keyword phrase to be in a description, title and/or the domain of your competition.
you just need to type in your keyword phrase into the google search box and hit search.
Evaluate the top ten that come up and see if your keyword phrase is in the title, description or in the domain.
if the top four have the keyword phrase you want in their title, description and domain then I wouldn't go after that keyword phrase.
Second, you want to see if the PR of your competition's website is greater than three.
You can knock down websites that have a PR lower than three
Third, you want to see how many back links the whole website is getting. This is not such an important issue if the website has a PR lower than three.
Fourth, you want to see how many back links that particular page is getting. If it's greater than 50 then I don't bother with it.
Fifth, you want to see how many different sources (other websites) that particular page is getting back links from.
You can do all this by using the Firefox plug-in known as SEO quake; just type it into Google and you'll get the information you need.
sixth, put your "keyword phrase" in quotes and hit search, ideally you want the number to be less than 50,000.
Seventh, put intitle:"keyword phrase" inanchor:"keyword phrase" into the search box, ideally you want this number to be under 1000.
If your keyword meets all the criteria then you have yourself a winner!
SEO-ing your article and page
This part is the simple part;
- your keyword phrase should be in the title tag,
- in the URL,
- once in H1 tags,
- once in H2 tags,
- no more than three times in the body (once in the first paragraph),
- Italicize or bold one of the key word phrases in your article text,
- keyword phrase within the first sentence of the description,
- use other words they relate to your keyword throughout the article, EX: Dog - Pooch
- your article should be at least 500 words
- it's not an absolute must but your keyword phrase in the domain is a plus but not essential. This is not the issue if you are creating websites around a particular niche with several sub niches and categories.
your article should always provide value. It should be informative and useful! Above all, it must be unique! It should not be found anywhere else on the Internet.
Off page SEO - What you need to know
this is a very important part. this is how you get the top rankings on Google.
This is all about DO FOLLOW back links with your keyword phrase as the anchor text and above all, you want many different sources.
you want back links from social networking sites, other blogs, article directories, bookmarking sites etc.
Google is a great democracy in where different sites vote for the credibility of your site by casting a back link to your site. The more powerful the site ( in relation to PR or PAGE RANK) the more powerful the back linking vote.
You want back links from strong websites and weak websites alike. you want those back links to have anchor text. Ex. You don't want www.organictraffic.com, you want organic traffic. because this tells Google what your site is about and it lets Google know that other websites are voting for you with back links.
another thing, you want dofollow back links you don't want nofollow back links. No follow back links tell Google not to credit you with a back link.
Just type in NODOFOLLOW firefox plugin for a free tool to help you determine if back links are no follow or do follow.
I personally outsource my back linking activities to the Philippines. It's quite reasonable to higher a virtual assistance from the Philippines to work for you as a back linker.
other important points to follow are; build your back links slowly and we optimize individual pages not websites. That being said you do need 40% of your back links to go to your main URL because your main domain is the platform for all of your other pages.
Lets review;

- you want back links from strong PR websites as well as weak PR websites
- you want to build back links slowly, 15 back links a week for a new website.
- you don't want back links from just one or three sources
